James Langston

JAMES P. LANGSTON, born in Montgomery, Alabama, October 17, 1944: in a military family, lived on several military bases in many different locations; began teaching at Crystal River Primary in 1968, Florida certificate number 243395; and has continued to work in the same county his entire teaching career while serving the community. His professional life has been devoted to teaching young people the skills necessary to succeed in life through a student-centered classroom where creativity, concentration, problem solving, self-efficiency and self-discipline are stressed.

1985-2000 Crystal River High School, teacher in the classroom and in charge of student displays, Art Festivals and the yearly Crystal River Mall exhibit; 1995 through 1998- United Way sponsor, 1995 Teacher of the Year, Head of the Fine Arts Department for the last six years, 1996-1998 School Safety Committee, 1994-1997 Student Study Team for student placement related to discipline, Senior Class sponsor for five years, Junior Class sponsor for four years, and sponsored the 1992-2000 Crystal River High branch of the National Arts Honor Society.

1971-1984 Crystal River Middle School, duties included managing classroom activities and serving as substitute Assistant Principal, worked with a team on the curriculum guide for county art teachers, coached basketball for two years, worked in a team teaching situation for three years, taught swimming in the summer recreation program for three years, assisted in the Guidance Office for one year, sponsor of the school Safety Patrol for five years and taught psychology in the night school at Crystal River High School for one year.

1985-1990 Crystal River Police Department, Part-time officer with a rank of Sergeant, responsible for training and qualification of police officers with department firearms, street patrol and some under-cover work.

1983-1985 Citrus County Sheriff's Department, part-time deputy. Duties included speaking to Crime Watch groups, working with Citrus County Sheriff's Explorers Post on firearm safety and participation in the Drug Task Force.

1982-1990 Training Counselor/ Range Master, Citrus County Law Enforcement Training Facility, Crystal River, Florida.

1979-1982 Lewis Development Corporation, Crystal River, Florida, secretary/treasurer, in charge of all monies for home construction, contact person for the banks, trouble-shooter for clients and handled all detail work at the completion of each project.

1968-1978 Troy Messenger Newspaper, Troy, Alabama, Photographed social events and news, set up the newspapers darkroom and handled events from the photograph to the actual edition.

1967-1968 Southern Bell Telephone, Montgomery, Alabama, lineman traveling through central and southern Alabama putting up telephones poles and lines and other construction projects.

1964-1966 Mueller Photographic Studio, Wiesbaden, Germany, assisted Master German photographer in his studio. Worked in both darkroom and studio.

1961-1963 Troy State University Art Department, as a student on a work study program, prepared slide library, photographed lecture series, documented the activities of various staff members at seminars around the South, and assisted in setting up the University's photographic darkroom.
