Acicastello (Sicily)
The Norman castle in Acicastello is sitting on a basalt rock which jets out into the sea. This interesting geological formation was covered with lava from an eruption in 1169. The castle was rebuilt by Roger of Lauria, the rebel admiral of Frederick II (1297).
