Casertavecchia

Streets of Casertavecchia

It is a small medieval village defended on the hem of one hill pointed out on the plain of Caserta, and dominated from the rests of a castle (sec. IX).
When Caserta was founded, the country on the hill was abandoned: only today the ancient medieval houses, in part restored, return to be inhabited, and the silent streets are filled up, above all the evening, of the voices of the tourists attracted from its beautiful restaurants and the fascination of a so singular place. The main public square of Casertavecchia is dominated by the cathedral, dated to 1153: a great church covered in tufo, with an elegant yellow and grey stone cupola, according to an architectonic Arabic that remembers the masterpieces of the muslim Sicily.
