Most of mankind has awaited the arrival of the year 2000 with the same thrill and excitement of one on his first date with a gorgeous girl. People were going almost nuts, and only occasionally thought that perhaps things wouldn't have changed at all other than for the fact that the digit '9' would have not been used in dates for some time. While the general idiocy spread and reporters kept talking about the same bullshit (like where the first child of the new millennium would have been born - and who cares!, or what the Pope was going to say in his last speech), far off the Breton coast the oil spilled by the tanker "Erika" was inexorably destroying plant and animal life. In all honesty, I believe that the onset of the year 2000 after all is not any more promising than what preceded it.
Gran parte dell’umanità ha atteso l’arrivo del 2000 con lo stesso tasso adrenalinico di chi ha atteso al primo appuntamento l’arrivo di una splendida ragazza. La gente quasi impazziva e ogni tanto ci si ricordava che forse non sarebbe cambiato niente se non il fatto che per un po’ di anni non si sarebbe più scritto il numero “9” nella data. Mentre l’idiozia proliferava e man mano che l’ora X si avvicinava, e mentre i giornalisti continuavano a ripetere le solite stronzate come le previsioni sul dove sarebbe nato il primo bambino del millennio, (ma chi se ne frega!) o su quale sarebbe stato l’ultimo discorso del millennio del Papa, il 12/12/99 al largo della Bretagna, il combustibile della petroliera “Erika” distruggeva inesorabilmente vita animale e vegetale. In tutta onestà credo che l’avvento del 2000, dopotutto non prometta più di quanto ci abbia riservato il precedente. |
