In the wonderful city of Granada, in the heart of Andalusia, there is an old Arab royal site “Alhambra”. It is an ancient fortified citadel that has been known since the 9th century. In the fourteenth century about 1500 people lived there and 40,000 people lived in Granada.
The Alhambra was an autonomous structure and not dependent on the city as there were all the services (mosques, shops, schools).

Thanks to the Christian Kings it is now possible to visit this wonderful complex as after having conquered it in 1492 they did not destroy it and continued the works making the Alhambra even more beautiful and building a marvelous one in 1526 commissioned by King Charles V.

Thanks to Washington Irving, who lived in the Alhambra and wrote Alhambra Stories, that the grandiose monument regained its original charm in the eyes of the world.

Alhambra

In 1984 it became, together with the Generlife of Granada, a Unesco World Heritage Site and became one of the 21 finalists to become one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

The most impressive and best preserved is the Arab area of the Nazaries palace, which has three buildings:

The Mexuar, The palace of the Throne of Yusuf, The palace of the Lions.

THE GENERALIFE

Finally, absolutely not to forget the Generalife, the summer residence of the sultans, an ideal place for rest and for this purpose built a little further away from the central part, surrounded by gardens and fountains, among which the Escalera del Agua stands out, where rivulets of fresh water run fast on the stone handrails.
