Spoleto Umbria

Spoleto is one of the most fascinating art cities of Umbria. More than 2000 years of art and culture and international events make it a place of unique beauty.

It extends on the Sant’Elia hill, at the foot of the sacred wood of Monteluco. Extraordinarily rich in art from every era and protagonist of prestigious events, such as the Festival dei Due Mondi. Spoleto is one of the symbolic cities of international culture.

The historic center, alongside evident influences from the Roman era, maintains the medieval structure intact. The Arch of Drusus and Germanicus, a Roman arch that introduced the forum (current site of Piazza del Mercato), to the Romanesque church of Sant’Ansano, the Roman theater, the basilica of San Salvatore, belong to the most ancient origins of Spoleto.

The major city monument is the Cathedral. Erected in Romanesque form in the 12th century, it underwent subsequent interventions with the addition of a Renaissance-style portico, on the facade it is adorned with a large mosaic
