CAPACCIO

The municipality of Capaccio rises on Mount Calpazio from which it probably takes its name.

Its history is closely linked to that of the Greek colonization of the Tyrrhenian coast.

It is divided into two residential areas, one medieval and the other modern.

Very little remains of the ancient walls of Capaccio “Vecchia” where the Pestani people found refuge in the 9th century. Restored by the Angevins, it has some characteristics ascribable to the fortifications built by the Normans.

Of the medieval urban settlement, we have traces of splendid houses found at the top of Mount Calpazio together with some ceramic fragments that testify to the presence of inhabited nuclei in the ancient village at least until the eighteenth century. The Castle of which today only the ruins remain, was for a long time under the direct control of the Crown. The remarkable Cathedral of the Madonna del Granato is indicated as the symbol of continuity between Paestum and Capaccio. In fact, the people from Padua who took refuge in Capaccio developed Christian devotion, continuing the pagan cult of Hera. Equally important is the Church of the Annunciation, located at the gates of the archaeological site of Paestum.

Capaccio is famous for its beautiful and historical arcades which attract tourists every year for the “open courtyards” event and it is possible to access the private residences to admire the complex architectural design of the arches up close.
