Scicli, monumental Baroque city in the shape of an excellent living nativity scene, in 2002 its historic center was awarded the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO, together with seven other municipalities in the list of Late Baroque cities of the Val di Noto.
“The city of Scicli rises at the intersection of three valleys, with houses on all sides on the cliffs, a large square at the bottom straddling a stream, and ancient ecclesiastical buildings that crown the semicircle in several points, such as baroque acropolises of the altitudes … “

Scicli is 24 kilometers from Ragusa. Its municipal territory extends from the sea to the southern offshoots of the Hyblaean plateau. The landscapes are very varied: you pass from the coast (alternating the low and sandy one with modest limestone cliffs) covered by the Mediterranean scrub to the gentle slopes of alluvial origin of the hinterland with olive, almond and carob trees up to the limestone reliefs of the northern part and in which the capital is located.

The origins of the city of Scicli are very ancient and probably date back to the Sicilian period, therefore over 3000 years ago. The name, according to some scholars, derives from Šiclis, one of the names used to indicate the Sicilians

SAN MATTEO CHURCH.
A church already existed in the early Middle Ages in the same point of the current building, which was depicted by paintings and engravings preserved in various churches of Scicli depicting the hill of San Matteo, with the church and the soaring bell tower placed close to the apses.
